The monks begin their day at 5:30 AM with morning assembly, during which they perform the Four Mandala Offering to Tara. After breakfast, at 7:30, the monks attend class with one of our teachers, Khenpo Thubten Tharchin, Khenpo Choying or Gen Jampel Tenzin. Tea is served at 9:30 before classes begin again. From 10 to 12, the monks review their lessons and practice calligraphy. Lunch is served at noon. At 2:30 the older monks study rituals with Samten Gyatso, learning how to play the different horns, cymbals and drums and how to construct tormas. Meanwhile the younger monks practice their Tibetan. Afternoon tea is served at 4:30 and the monks have a break before evening assembly at 5:30. Dinner is at 6:30 and at 7:30 the monks retire to their room to review their lessons and memorize the texts relevant to their study. Lights are turned out at 9:30, but only the most keen are still up after such a full day of study!
